Ph. Encountering the enchanting Manul cats and witnessing their captivating range of facial expressions opens a window into their mysterious world.

The Manul cat, also known as Pallas’ cat, is a wild cat species found in Central Asia that is close to becoming endangered. These cats are easily recognizable because of their unique features such as round pupils, short legs, and a flat face with wide-set ears that make for hilarious expressions. The Otocolobus is the scientific name for this cat, which means “ugly-eared,” possibly explaining why they always seem annoyed. Despite their fluffy appearance, these felines are about the same size and weight as domestic cats. They inhabit high altitudes of up to 15,000ft and enjoy colder climates. Their short and stubby legs make them poor runners, so they prefer hiding in crevices under boulders if they need to escape. Although these pictures make them look like fun pets with expressive faces, their solitary and wild nature, as well as their high mortality rate at low altitudes, restricts them mainly to professional zoos.
